LOREZ-DOLORES-TABULA-RASA, A FIBER OPTIC INSTALLATION FOR RON ARAD

Ron Arad approached Troika for the design development of this ambitious installation which has been exhibited at the Venice International Biennale of Architecture 2004.

The initial idea was to be able to transform any material into a full colour screen. Starting from Ron Arad’s idea of ‘injecting’ video in a material through the use of fiber optics, we were in charge of the design development and implementation in collaboration with Ron Arad Associates and The Gallery Mourmans.

After extensive research, several prototypes of fiber projectors were devised and made in a very hands-on approach, thinking outside the box.

We then designed a giant wall and a low table made of soft white DuPont™ Corian®. To produce the millions of coloured dots that appears on their surfaces, more than 550 km of fibers were needed, as well as a 3kW projector and a lot of sweat.

The result is stunning, the back of the wall seems to be a living creature while each strand of fibre illuminates itself with vivid colours…

"Imagine an empty space with tactile satin smooth white walls... just when you're not looking, moving images emerge in the depth of the wall..." (Ron Arad)

Described by Arad as 'the most difficult thing we have ever done', the final realisation of "Lo-Res-Dolores-Tabula-Rasa" justifies the effort.
